Today was a very good day

It goes without saying that working at Saturday Night Live was one of the most amazing experiences I think I’ll ever have in my career. But when your work/life balance weighs (extremely) heavy on work, you have next to no wiggle room to explore other important avenues you should pursue, and many, many, many sacrifices are made because of your devotion to your demanding job.
At SNL, I had oddly grown an interest in the creative advertising world. A friend advised me to take some advertising courses at SVA, and I thought “What the hell. We’ll see how I do.” I shifted my 80-hour work week around to add night classes, and met with several advertising veterans for coffee and asked for advice.
Now, 5 years since my career began as a NBC Page (before SNL), I’m really excited that I listened to my gut and left NBC. I learned everything I know there, but I discovered my talent for animation (which I wouldn’t have had the time for at SNL), and in two weeks, I’ll be working at the creative digital agency, AKQA.
Today was a very good day.
